When life is not all roses, rainbows and butterflies and it feels as though it is more clouds, thorns and snakes, we need NOT think about the past, nor the future but be mindful of the present moment.
I am trying very hard to be mindful, and as i teach myself i hope to teach someone else. We all feel stuck in the mud at times, it can be family matters, society, finances, health issues, work, and many other circumstances. It can be all of the above at the same time! When we think of our troubles in terms and let me give an example, our bills we have to pay, shortage of funds, or what is happening to our family members or society in a whole. We get that twinge of pain in our stomach and our head starts to hurt as our body tenses and our blood pressure rises, leaving us in a state of high arousal and panic. I am learning to try to let go of things that TRY to control me and TAKE back control of my life! My health, destiny, wellbeing and choices as well as circumstances are mine to take hold of. And even if the road is hard and long i will conquer, and i will do it, learning to let my mind wander and drift and be mindful of the present moment.
What is the meaning of mindfulness? Mindfulness is being in the present. It is being in the present holding no grudges. It is breathing, awareness, mediatition, and relaxing the body and the mind. It is both a skill and a tool and you/I may fail at it a hundred times, but once it is learned it is very beneficial! The body will thank you, not only will you reduce stress, you will also, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, may reduce pain, and help with digestive issues.
So how do you learn to be mindful. For me today as i was driving, i turned the radio off and rolled down the window. I listened to the noise outside, the birds chirping, the cars driving by and was in tune with the glare and warmth of the sun. For a total of one minute i was mindful of these things around me. For one moment i was not stressed, nor in pain! I was aware of sounds and feelings! Honestly, it was amazing. And although brief i will learn to make those moments last longer. I will listen to the rain. I will stare at a beautiful flower and take in the way it smells. I will learn to breathe deeply, and feel the deep sensations of the body we are given when we take a deep breath. I will sip my coffee and actually taste the warmth and flavor. When i eat something, i will eat it slowly and ACTUALLY taste it and enjoy it! These are small things but they are ways to be mindful! You can come up with your own ways, there is no right or wrong way to be mindful! Use any technique, you can use prayer, yoga, mediation, just be present, let your mind wander, breathe deeply, and let go, revel in the beauty that is inside and around you! Your mind and body will thank you! 🙂
