Keeping skin, “Youthful” in the middle years!

After working in dermatology for over eight years, and after speaking with several dermatologist that i have grown to know and have been a patient of myself, i have learned a great deal about skin care. I always say ask your doctor questions, questions and more questions!! I am at the young age of 46 and still get carded 🙂 so i would like to share some key points to other woman, and or men about keeping the skin as young as you can for as long as you can!! I think i have some good key points and take it from me, i get from people that they think i am 28 which is almost 20 years younger then i’am so therefore let me share some secrets. 😉

First and foremost, yes, we need the sun for vitamin D, HOWEVER we can accomplish that in as little as about 10 minutes. After that we damage our skin. So i guess we can agree less is more when it comes to the sun. So my advice is apply sunscreen and reapply even if it is water proof, reapply and reapply more!! You can never apply too much! I have seen skin cancer on people young and old it is not pretty nor fun to treat. Sunscreen my friends is your FRIEND!!

Also do not buy into these abrasive facials, all you need to clean your face is gentle cleansers. No toners, no harsh scrubs. Use aveeno soap, neutrogena products, and cerave. And ALWAYS apply a SPF of 30 on the face. Cerave uses a SPF of 30 and is ultralight. I also use there nighttime cream at bed. Cerave is not heavy, it is lightweight and has no odor. Perfect and gentle!!

Do Not Smoke! Smoking is so bad for the body and for the skin! It ages you tremendously, inside and out. I know people my age that look 10 years older then they should because of cigarettes. It causes wrinkles and more wrinkles. Age gracefully 🙂 Besides it is a carcinogen.

Eat well, this is a no brainer! Stay hydrated tons of H2O . You can add lemon slices to your water or drink seltzer. Just drink water, cut out all that soda. Sure a glass of sprite, ginger ale here or there may not hurt, but daily, not good for the skin. And tons of veggies, add color to your plate! There are many powerful antioxidants in veggies, they fight free radicals. Drink Green tea as well, powerful for the skin and the body. Do not fill up on tons of sugar, sure i enjoy ice cream and cookies, however in moderation. I mostly fill my plate with veggies and enjoy a small treat a few times a week, not daily!

Use a retinoid, very important! Sure adapalene which is a retinoid is now over the counter is fine. Just keep in mind retinoids are not the same as retinols. Retinoids are Vitaman A, retinol is less potent and sold in drug stores in beauty products. If you want results consult a dermatologist and get a prescription for a good retinoid. A dermatologist, a good one, can direct and inform you of what is good for your skin, and your concerns. There are many retinoids out there that are wonderful, ask your derm today what will be best for your skin type and concerns. I have used one for over 10 years and i am thrilled with the results. There also ways to apply this medication nightly with plenty of moisturizer, because it can and will dry your skin. REMEMBER this is a medication ONLY given by a professional, and you must follow the directions given. Go see your dermatologist today, and ask questions about skin care for your needs!!
